The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) issues the 12-digit Aadhaar card, which is now a necessary document for all Indian citizens. It is necessary to obtain various government services and benefits and acts as identification and address verification.

With the use of the user-friendly myAadhaar portal, which is offered by the UIDAI, you can update your address, name, gender, and birthdate, among other demographic information.

Update Aadhaar

One can easily update their Aadhaar either through online or offline platforms. Below are the details for the same.

Online Update

UIDAI has simplified the process of updating certain Aadhaar details through its user-friendly online platform, the my Aadhaar portal:

  • Step 1: Visit the official myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  • Step 2: On the homepage, login by entering your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code displayed on the screen. Click on "Send OTP" to receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile number. Enter this OTP to log in securely.

  • Step 3: You will have the option "Document Update" for updating your POI/POA documents, click on it.

  • Step 4: Carefully review the existing information displayed on the screen, to understand the objective and click on next to update POI/POA

If you want to update your address you can click on the option “click here”, where you need to choose between two methods: provide document-based proof of your new address or utilize the Head of Family (HoF)-based update if you reside with a family member whose Aadhaar address is updated.

  • Step 5: Next, whatever option you choose, review the existing information and make necessary corrections.
  • Step 6: Fill in the updated details carefully, ensuring accuracy in spelling and information.
  • Step 7: If updating your address or POI/POA documents, upload scanned copies of the required documents. Ensure they are clear, legible, and self-attested (signed by you).

  • Step 8: Thoroughly review all the information and documents you have provided. Once you are satisfied with their accuracy, click on "Submit" to initiate the update process.
  • Step 9: If you are updating demographic details other than POI/POA documents after June 14, 2024, a nominal fee of ₹50 will be applicable. You can make this payment online.
  • Step 10: Upon successful submission, you will receive a unique Update Request Number (URN). This URN is crucial for tracking the status of your update request.

Offline Aadhaar Update

While the online update process is convenient for specific changes, certain updates require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK).

These include updates to biometric information (fingerprints, iris scans, and photograph) and other details not available for online modification.

  • Step 1: Use the UIDAI website or mAadhaar app to find the nearest ASK (Aadhaar Sewa Kendra). You can filter by location or pin code for convenience.
  • Step 2: Collect the Aadhaar Update/Correction Form from the ASK and fill it out meticulously.
  • Step 3: Submit the original supporting documents as specified by UIDAI for verification. These documents should be self-attested.
  • Step 4: If you are updating your biometric information, the ASK officials will recapture your fingerprints, iris scans, and photograph using their specialized equipment.
  • Step 5: A nominal fee applies for offline updates:
    • Demographic updates: ₹50
    • Biometric updates: ₹100
  • Step 6: After completing the process, you will receive an acknowledgement slip containing your URN. Keep this slip safe, as you will need it to track the status of your update.

Update Forms

  • Form 1: For (a) Resident Indian, or (b) Non-Resident Indian with Proof of Address in India (aged 18 years and above).
  • Form 3: For (a) Resident Indian child, or (b) Non-Resident Indian child with Proof of Address in India (aged 5 years and above, but less than 18 years).
  • Form 5: For (a) Resident Indian child, or (b) Non-Resident Indian child with Proof of Address in India (below 5 years of age).
  • Form 7: For Resident Foreign National (aged 18 years or above).
  • Form 8: For Resident Foreign National (aged below 18 years)

Required Documents

The documents required for updating your Aadhaar depend on the specific information you are changing:

  • Proof of Identity (POI): Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, driving license, government-issued photo ID card, etc.
  • Proof of Address (POA): Ration card, passport, bank statement/passbook, utility bill (water, electricity, gas), etc.
  • Proof of Date of Birth (DOB): Birth certificate, passport, SSLC book/certificate, PAN card, mark sheet issued by a government board/university, etc.
  • Proof of Relationship (PoR): This is required if you're updating information related to your relationship with the Head of Family (HoF). Documents like a marriage certificate, passport of spouse, etc., can be used.

The update process usually takes a few weeks to complete, but you can monitor its progress regularly through these channels.

Why Update Aadhaar Information?

Keeping your Aadhaar details current is essential for several reasons:
